Lew “Sweet Lew” Rosengrant began playing drums at the age of twelve, taking lessons in his home town of Wall, NJ. In Monmouth University’s Music program, he honed his skills in jazz, and orchestral playing, as well as gigging with many bands in the New York, and New Jersey ares. teaching at Drummers Alley, and Red Bank Academy of the Arts, both located in Red Bank. Lew relocated to New York City to study and gig with such drummers as Derrek Phillips from The Charlie Hunter Trio, and the Brazilian Parade band Samba New York as well as sit in on many jam sessions. The city also gave Lew an opportunity to write some of his own music for his wife Kristin’s dance company, DeXdance and have many of his compositions featured in venues ranging from Maine to Florida. Upon moving back to NJ, Lew began working with musicians such the folk band Causeway, art electronic band Recreation Arts and Pets, and Marco Fuchs of M’Zume, with whom he began teaching Brazilian and world beat rhythms to students at the Count Basie Cool School’s weekly drum circles in Red Bank. All this, while continuing his teaching at Drummers Alley and Atlantic Drums and Percussion. Now, full time drumming for The Matt O’Ree Band, as well as The Conjugals keeps Lew busy playing styles from rock to blues to jazz.
