GRAMMY® Award-Winning Javier Cabanillas, Percussionist, Composer & Educator is based out of San Francisco, CA.
Although, he's currently based out of San Francisco, his career started in Tijuana, Mexico playing congas at local "Flea Markets" or also known in Spanish as "Sobre Ruedas.". Cabanillas always credits his parents as his major musical inspiration and influence when he was growing up between the cities of Cd. Obregon, Sonora, Tijuana, and California.
Cabanillas' passion for music landed him formal music studies at Southwestern College, San Diego State University, and The Conservatory Jazz College in Berkeley. Since then, he has been active in the local scenes as a freelance percussionist with congas being his main instrument.
Cabanillas is most recognized for his recording and touring work as conga player for GRAMMY® AWARD-Winning Pacific Mambo Orchestra Winning in the category for Best Latin Tropical Album of the Year (2014).
In addition, Cabanillas has played with Tito Puente Jr., Poncho Sanchez, Adrian Terrazas-Gonzalez (The Mars Volta), Karl Perazzo (Member of the Santana Band), Brian Jordan (Lauryn Hill), Tommy Igoe (Modern Drummer Magazine), Tom E. Politzer (Tower of Power), John Santos, Jerry Gonzalez (Fort Apache Band), Ray Obiedo (Herbie Hancock), Willy Torres, Marlow Rosado, and Orquesta La Palabra, as well as opened for Ry Cooder, Eek E Mouse, Sargento Garcia, and many influential artists.
Cabanillas as an educator is member (2012-Present) of the San Francisco Symphony's Educational Department Adventures In Music (AIM), teaches percussion at the San Francisco California Music Center (Mission District) SFCMC; Academic and Music Enrichment Instructor at East Bay Agency for Children in Oakland, and has taught percussion classes/workshops/clinics internationally between Mexico and United States. Cabanillas also serves as Board Member for Loco Bloco Organization: a Latin-American music and dance program for kids based in the Mission District of San Francisco.
Cabanillas is also endorsed with Tycoon Percussion and is currently recording and touring on new projects.
